Diversions - Urasoe's coming of age day

Location: Urasoe Tedako Hall, off the 58 (Yafuso intersection) or the 330 (Ohira intersection), take the first major left at the sign for the library, art museum, and public hall. Occurs in January.
We stumbled on this, having just briefly read about it in Japan Update and other magazines. The people watching was great - girls in their kimonos with elaborate haircolors and styles, adorned in fur stoles (in Okinawa!). Boys in dark suits but many with a funky flourish - pink feather fans, purple ties, dreads, 1980's guitar hero hair, etc. The event was voluntary sex-segregated, it seemed to us mostly because the boys spray each other with beer and you wouldn't want to mess up your kimono. Proud conservative parents milled about, as did young men with mohawks and skin tight corduroy pants. The group of boys in fatigues also had long teased hair and ponytails. Lots of police standing by, but no trouble occurred.
